Citronella (Cymbopogon nardus)
Location: It is grown mainly in India, Java and Sri Lanka.
Extraction: Steam distilled from the dried leaves.
Colour and Odour: The essential oil is pale yellow in colour, having a fresh, lemony and sweet aroma.
Description: A hardy grass growing about 90 cm tall with long slender leaves; it flowers periodically.
Background: Introduced into Europe during the nineteenth century, Known universally for its insect-repellent properties. It is used in Europe as a room disinfectant and an air-freshener. It is useful to keep in the linen cupboard as it will keep the clothes fresh and deter moths and insects. Citronella is disliked by cats and rodents.
Properties: Tonic, stimulant, antiseptic, insecticide and antidepressant.
Precaution: This oil is best used in lower concentrations as it may cause irritation in sensitive people.
Uses
Respiratory System-It is good for hay fever.
Skin-It is a deodorant and can refresh sweaty, tired feet.
Emotion-Can help ease feelings of depression by its clearing and uplifting effect. Excellent as a flying insect repellent.
